Assistive Technology in Schools

Supporting and improving the use of assistive technology in your school or district.

What is Assistive Technology?

Assistive Technology (devices and services) is a critical part of many students' success. Assistive technology in schools can be described as "any item, piece of equipment, or product...that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities." This definition allows for a broad continuum of no-tech, mid-tech, and high-tech options to be explored, which means anything from adapted paper to an AAC device.

Federal regulations require admission, review, and dismissal committees to consider the student's need for assistive technology in the development of the student’s individualized education program (IEP). Assistive technology devices and services must be made available if required as part of the child's specially designed instruction, related services, or supplementary aids and services.

We provide your campus assistive technology teams with professional development, program support, resources, equipment checkouts, and a leadership network for communication and collaboration designed to ensure best practices.
