Roles and Expectations of a Responsive Coach

Identity, Impact, and Expansion to PLC

A clear descriptor of the coach’s role is vital in creating the vulnerability and trust needed to maximize educator growth. That trust needs to exist among coaches, teachers, and administrators. The effective instructional coach and teacher leaders should be among the most coached staff within a school, modelling “coachability.” As students’ needs change, the prioritized role of coaches often changes; sometimes focused on individual teachers, other times teams, or whole staff. At times coaches are developing, delivering, and coaching professional learning for new instructional practices. At other times more focus might be supporting teachers in PLC’s identifying “what our students need us to learn.” This program is built to provide you with high quality knowledge, resources, and modelling along with personalized coaching to refine and apply your practices in YOUR role.

Course #2

Actions of a Responsive Coach:

Coaching Conferences, Paraphrasing, and Feedback

Effective instructional coaching relies on positive relationships and constructive conversations. A trusting relationship between coach and teacher requires the undivided attention that is synonymous with active listening as well as a recognition that body language and voice tone are integral components of the conversation. When a teacher knows that the coach recognizes and supports her goals and values, she is more open (vulnerable) to the exploration, reflection, and experimentation in coaching that produces new understanding and skills. Providing feedback that is teacher requested is most likely to support continuous teacher growth. This program is built to provide you with high quality knowledge, resources, and modelling along with personalized coaching to refine and apply coaching conferencing skills into your practice.

Course #3

Skills of a Responsive Coach:

Questioning, Questioning, Questioning

Skilled questioners are intentional in their ability to scaffold questions in order to help the learner construct meaning. When coaches have a clear direction and know their audience well, they can determine what types of questions to ask as well as differentiate those questions for individuals. Examine the various forms of questioning (with an emphasis on Questions for Life and Learning) to lead others toward becoming proficient questioners who, in turn, are more responsive to student needs. Application of questioning skills and strategies in coaching conferences, professional development activities, and professional learning communities will be explored. This program is built to provide you with high quality knowledge, resources, and modelling along with personalized coaching to refine and apply coaching conferencing skills into your practice.
